Personalized Imperial M-89 Infantry Degen w/Damascus
Blade. Ewald Cleff, Solingen (stamped on ricasso)
(name of maker in raised etch on spine of blade)
TM. This sword was recently obtained in the former
East Germany. Gilted brass hilt fittings show light
wear/age patina to the deluxe, heavily-chased pommel,
knuckle-bow and Imperial eagle folding handguard,
with traces of gilting remaining in recesses. Black/dark
brown horn grip shows light surface wear with no
cracks or chips, and is complete with triple wire
wrap and “WRII” royal cypher pinned to obverse grip.
Hilt is complete with original leather fingerloop
which shows light wear. Damascus “maiden hair” pattern
blade measuring 31 ¼” inches in length grades excellent,
showing light surface wear, minor gray shadowing,
and approximately 10 minor nicks to cutting edge
of blade. Unique, narrow blade resembles the blade
of a Court sword, and features gilted/blued panels
approximately 6” in length, on both obverse and
reverse. Obverse blued panel features raised gilted
name, “Curt von Rode”, as well as a small panel
marked, “Damaststahl”, while the reverse blued panel
features Imperial eagle beneath Imperial crown,
and a small panel marked, “Eisenhauer”. Is complete
with black leather blade buffer pad. Dent-free anodized
scabbard shows light surface wear, with minor crazing
to finish. Beautiful personalized sword with unique,
narrow blade, with name of original owner which
could easily be traced. Great research project.
