On the obverse is deep, acid-etched floral
motif, with the center having crossed swords.
Reverse has the floral motif deeply etched,
running about 14" down the panel. In the center
is a smooth presentation area where the following
is engraved, "Unserem lieben Oberleutnant
Jagerung von Lutzow 1929" (To our dear 1st
Lieutenant, Hunting Group von Lutzow 1929).
This is beautifully jeweler engraved in the
finest manner. Spine of the blade is also
nicely engraved. Quality engraved blades of
this type are a work-of-art, and would be
a centerpiece of any serious sword collector.

Kirchbach/V. Westernhagen 1907". Written on
the reverse within a panel at the top is "Furchtlos
und Treu", which translates to "Fearless and
true". This is raised in gold. About 5 or
6" beneath these panels are raised gold ornate
floral panels with crossed swords on the obverse
and a shield with helmet, axe, and spear on

the medical profession. Grip is complete with

Obverse blade features floral panels, as well

flanking a blued presentation panel. The presentation
panel features the following inscription:
“Dem Stabarztd. Landwehr Dr Hansberg zum 25
Jahr. Offizier-Jubiläum” (to Landwehr Medical

as an officer). Reverse blade features a floral

central panel with the inscription, "Zum Andenken
Meinem Lieben Major v. Herff" in raised gilt
Gothic letters. Reverse blade features a 5"
blued panel with gilt border flanked by gilt
oak leaves, with the name, "Mendoza" in raised
gilt letters. Major von Herff was promoted
to the rank of Major on 27 January 1905, and
in the 1905 Prussian Ranklist appears as a
member of the "Triersches Feldartillerie =
Regiment Nr. 44". Major von Herff was promoted
to Oberstleutnant in 1912 and to Oberst in
1914. In the 1914 Prussian Ranklist, von Herff
appears as the Commander of the 2. Rheinisches
Feldartillerie = Regiment Nr. 23". There is
no listing in the Imperial German ranklist
for an officer with the name of Mendoza. |

Unique sword was presented by Leutnant von
Gaffron und Oberstradem to Leutnant von Plänckner
while both Officers were assigned to Grenadier-Regiment
König Wilhelm I. (2.Westpreussisches) Nr.
7. Sword was probably presented in 1891, as
both Officers appear as members of this Regiment
in the 1891 ranklist, while in the 1892 ranklist,
Leutnant von Plänckner appears as a member
of the I. Thüringisches Infanterie-Regiment
Nr. 31. Obverse langet features a heavily-chiseled
profile of Athena, the Roman Goddess of War.
Top of the lion head pommel has been hand-fitted
to accept an M89 pattern pommel cap which
features the deeply-engraved von Plänckner
coat of arms. Modified “peacock” Damascus
quillback blade. Obverse blade features a
7 ½” long blued panel surrounded by a gilt
border and floral motif with the presentation
inscription, “von Gaffron und Oberstradem
s/l. von Plänckner” in shadowed gilt, Gothic
letters. Reverse blade features a 7 ½” blued
panel with gilt borders and floral motif,
with the Latin inscription, “Si Perdis Honorem,
Omnia Perdidis” (If you lose honor, you have
lost all things) in shadowed gilt, Gothic
letters. Spine of the blade is marked in gilt
