1890 Imperial Naval Cadet Dagger

Blade features 7 " long etched panels with a central display of Imperial crown above a fouled anchor flanked at the tip end by a military motif of flags, cannon and drums, while the ricasso end features sailing ship.

An example of this type dagger can be found on page 43 of Collecting the Edged Weapons of Imperial Germany. Blade is deeply double-engraved, showing the sailing ship motif with fouled anchors, and two oars crossed beneath. This is the first time that I've encountered this particular style. Beautiful, deep engraving is comparable to the Emil Voos blades.

Features "flaming ball" pommel that has the tang of the blade peened to the top. Crossguard has the unique release button on the reverse.

Reverse crossguard is stamped "1891". Lower crossguard is also stamped on the bottom with "63". Double-engraved blade shows the fouled anchor with the Imperial crown on obverse and reverse.

13 1/4" double-etched blade. Lightly etched panels feature Naval motif surmounted by the Imperial crown. Upper reverse scabbard is jeweler-engraved with the name "Kuhl". Research in the Imperial ranklist reveals only one Naval cadet by the name Kuhl entered the Navy during the 1912-1914 timeframe. The cadet's/officer's name was "Wilhelm Kuhl" with an entry date of April 1913. Dagger includes several photocopied pages of ranklists tracing the career of this officer during WWI.

Gilted brass hilt fittings feature closed crown pommel and large capstan pattern crossguard. Double-etched blade features crown-over- fouled-anchor and sailing ship motif.

Original owner's name is professionally engraved on reverse upper scabbard, "Ludloff". Double-engraved blade is exceptional. Blade etching is deeper than usually found on Imperial pieces. Engraved panels feature the royal cypher with fouled anchor and sailing ship motif, crossed oars and trident. Reverse features basically the same pattern.
